Kids First: Parenting Class

For children, divorce can be stressful, sad, and confusing. At any age, kids may feel uncertain or angry at the prospect of mom and dad splitting up. As a parent, you can make the process and its effects less painful for your children. Helping your kids cope with divorce or separation means providing stability in your home and attending to your children’s needs with a reassuring and positive attitude. It won’t be a seamless process, but our goal through this class is to provide information about the effects divorce has on children, their development, and co-parenting in a positive way, for the benefit of your entire family.

Course Overview

St. Croix Valley Restorative Services offers a course for parents and families in transition, where parents learn techniques and tools for effective co-parenting during divorce or separation. This is a one-time, two-hour educational course, pursuant to WI Statute 767.115 offered to participants referred from Pierce and Saint Croix Counties.

In this class, parents learn to think about the situations in which conflict usually occurs in a way that gives them more options on how to handle themselves, thereby reducing the other parent’s likelihood of aggression or non-cooperation. They also learn effective methods for reducing their emotional reactions, which gives them better control in tense situations and sets better examples for their children. Parents also increase their effectiveness with and sensitivity to their children’s needs, significantly lowering their children’s risk for behavior problems, depression, delinquency, school failure and substance abuse.

Certificate of Completion will be provided directly to each participant, following successful completion of the course.
